Pure White Cats Deaf
Albinos are extremely rare and only make up about 2 percent of the feline population.
Pure white cats deaf. Of the 5 of white cats in the overall population 60-80 had eyes. Cats with the dominant white or white spots gene may suffer from genetic deafness. 30-40 had one blue eye and were deaf while 60-70 had one blue eye and normal hearing.
But not all white cats are deaf. 20-40 have normal hearing. Its believed that the ear closest to the oddly colored eye or both ears if both eyes are uniquely colored will be the ear with deafness.
The deafness is caused by degeneration of the auditory apparatus of the inner ear and may affect one ear unilateral or both ears bilateral. 40 percent of white cats with one blue eye were deaf. Historically white cats were prone to being deaf I am not referring to pedigrees.
However that is not guaranteed. 5 of the general cat population is white cats ie. A failure to respond when spoken to or called.
31 of white cats and blue eyes had normal hearing. I am not sure but I think it was an inherited problem. However there is no need to be feared to bring a cat with blue eyes home because more than 50 percents of cats who are not pure white their blue eyes are not always related to deafness and blindness.
When cats with the W gene are bred the resulting litters have the chance to inherit faulty hearing. 7 of white cats with yellow eyes were deaf. No they are not deaf at allSome people say that deafness in a cat is due to hearing loss but the changein ear canal size does not change how the cats here and there is no evidenceof any other loss of hearing that would make a cat deaf.
